Minister replies to debate on demands for grants
: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government, in the last two years, set apart Rs.6,069 crore towards social security pension schemes, Social Welfare Minister B. Valarmathi said on Wednesday.
But, the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in its entire term of five years (2006-2011), allocated only Rs. 4,481.39 crore, she said, replying to a debate on the demands for grants of the departments of Social Welfare, Nutritious Meal Programme and Welfare of Differently Abled Persons.
Immediately on assumption of office, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, ordered that the amount of pension be increased to Rs. 1,000 per month in respect of all eight social security schemes, the Minister said, adding that in several other States, the amount of pension was remaining less.
Using bio-metric smart cards, the disbursement of social security pension was being made through banks, benefitting 6.25 lakh persons in 4,164 villages.
This was part of the first phase of the plan to cover all beneficiaries gradually.
