ERODE: The Erode Railway Station will be modernised at a cost of Rs. 5.50 crores, said the Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Women Empowerment, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, here on Saturday.
The amount has been sanctioned and after getting approval from the railway, the work will begin.
The platforms would be widened and extended. More computers would be provided to the reservation counter. The offices of Railway Mail Service and parcel would be shifted to more spacious locations.
The park in front of the railway station would get a facelift. Parking sheds would be constructed.
Toilet facilities would be provided to people visiting the railway reservation counter. VIP suites would be constructed on the platform.
The Minister blamed the Tamil Nadu Government for the delay in constructing bridges in Pallipalayam SPB Colony area (Tiruchengodu road) and Vendipalayam.
She claimed that because of the efforts taken by the DPA alliance parties, the Union Railway Minister has granted a railway division at Salem. She expressed the hope that it would start functioning from April 1.
Four Union Ministers will visit Tiruchengodu and explain welfare schemes and future plans for its development to the people, Ms. Jagadeesan said. The campaign would be conducted from January 27 to 29.
The Union Minister of State for Industries and Commerce, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, will inaugurate the campaign on January 27.
A seminar on agriculture, environment and health would be conducted.
On January 28, a seminar on 'Women Development' would be conducted in which the Union Minister of State for Finance, S. S. Palanimanickkam, will speak. On January 29, the Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Venkatapathy, will distribute prizes and participate in a seminar on 'Youth and employment.'
