Thanjavur district has been allocated Rs. 250 crore under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) providing employment to rural poor, said K. Baskaran, District Collector.

Inaugurating a social audit training programme for village panchayat presidents and secretaries of the village panchayats, Mr. Baskaran said that social audit is held to create awareness among people about their duties and responsibilities.

In the audit, they could learn whether the fund is utilised properly.

They would also ensure whether genuine beneficiaries got the work and wages were given to them on time. Social audits were conducted once in six months. K. Varadarajan, Project Director, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), was present.
