About 5.34 lakh cardholders will get 11,274 kg in June alone
DINDIGUL: Distribution of rice at the rate of Rs.2 a kg has been commenced in almost all shops in Dindigul and Theni districts.
Cardholders, mostly women, waited in front of the shops since morning to buy the rice. Meanwhile, party men erected banner near ration shops thanking the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi. The district supply office had already despatched sufficient stock of rice to all ration shops in the district to avoid short supply.
About 5.34 lakh cardholders would get 11,274 kg of rice in June alone. The district supply office has 12,000 tonnes of rice to meet the total requirement for this month. Special squads had been fanned out in all directions to prevent smuggling of PDS rice.
However, the distribution was abruptly stopped at shop no.47 at Bharathipuram in Dindigul town owing to lack of sales staff. The sales staff at shop no.47 had to manage shop no.48 at the next street. The salesman closed the less-crowded shop no. 47 in the morning itself and started distributing rice to cardholders waiting in a long queue at shop no.48.
Amid tight security, rice distribution commenced in almost all shops in the district. Party men distributed sweets to cardholders visiting the well-decorated shops in many places.
Adequate police force was deployed in the fair price and ration shops in order to avoid untoward incidents. District supply office too stocked more than required quantum of rice in each shop, officials said.
