As many as 326 road works to be taken up

CUDDALORE: The Tamil Nadu Government has sanctioned Rs. 12.5 crore to Cuddalore Municipality to take up as many as 326 road works, according to M.R.K. Panneer Selvam, Minister for Backward Classes.

Speaking at a function organised on the Municipal premises here on Tuesday, the Minister said that during the Karunanidhi regime Cuddalore town would get all necessary amenities.

It had been proposed to extend financial assistance to the tune of Rs. 2.22 crore to the Self-Help Groups and as a precursor Rs. 20,000 each was given away today to 32 SHGs.

Earlier, the Minister inaugurated various projects implemented by the Cuddalore Municipality at a total cost of Rs. 1.03 crore. These include additional buildings to Burgeespet municipal school (Rs. 18 lakh), extra class rooms and compound wall for the Vandipalayam municipal primary school (Rs. 22.50 lakhs), butchery at Thirupadiripuliyur market (Rs. 15 lakh) and pavement at bus stand (Rs. 10 lakh).

Mr. Panneer Selvam also laid foundation stones for the construction of a Council Hall (Rs. 10 lakh), municipal office expansion (Rs. 10 lakh) and artificial fountain and arch at the municipal office (Rs. 12.70 lakh).

Mr. Panneer Selvam called upon District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi to keep a check on the spiralling prices of essential commodities in Neyveli town. Union Minister of State for Law K. Venkatapathi appreciated the good works done by Municipal chairman, Mr. Rajendran, in the past four-and-half years, and hoped that he would maintain the tempo.

Mr. Venkatapathi pointed out that soon after the tsunami struck Cuddalore, the Municipal Chairman had appealed to T.R. Baalu to sanction funds for mending the roads. The Centre had granted Rs. 6.50 crore and with the funds the road network in Cuddalore town had been improved. Those who participated on the occasion included G. Iyappan, MLA, C. Chellappan, Municipal Commissioner, Balasubramaniam, Municipal Engineer and other officials.
