SALEM: Braving the chill weather of December night, a few Rotarians exhibited a rare humane gesture by providing blankets to those living on the pavements of city roads and streets to save them from cold.

With night temperature recording less than 20 degrees Celsius for the past fortnight in the city – an all-time low in recent times – the destitute, many of them aged and sick, are exposed to chill weather conditions.

Realising their plight, the members from Rotary Club of Salem Texcity, led by their president Dr G. Sundaramurthy, took a night errand to ‘cover’ the sufferings of these neglected people.

“We purchased 100 blankets at a cost of Rs.10,000 and handed over the same to the needy.

“Accompanied by the donors A. Madhavaraj and V Srinivasan, the Rotarians identified the most suffering lot and donated the blankets,” said its secretary B Gunasekaran. The Good Samaritan work, he said, would continue.
