A textile mill at Palladam, Alpine Spinning Mill, has installed 1 MW solar power generation unit on its rooftop.
Industry sources said a 1 MW unit on the ‘rooftop of a spinning mill’ is the first attempt of its kind on a mega scale among the units in the sector. “There are some units having solar power generation on lesser scales,” sources added.
Raja M. Shanmugam, director of the mill, told The Hindu that the gadget was installed by a Canadian company with components imported from Germany and China. According to him, the power generated from the solar unit is uploaded to the grid. The mill then in return can offset the cost against the use of grid power for the equivalent amount generated a day from the solar unit, which is a helpful thing in the long run, he said.
