200 sovereigns of jewels, Rs.30,000 cash stolen

A six-member gang of robbers struck at the house of a businessman in Rajakoil village near Gudiyatham and took away gold jewels weighing 200 sovereigns and cash to the tune of Rs.30,000 after threatening the inmates with weapons in the early hours of Monday.

According to the police, the gang which went to the house of T.N. Rajendran (60) armed with crowbars and iron rods at about 1.30 a.m., broke the lock of the front gate, and lock of the main door with a gas-cutting equipment and barged into the house. They threatened Mr. Rajendran and his family members with iron rods and forced them to part with the key to the cupboard and the cell phones in their possession. The family members handed over the key and the cell phones. The gang members threw the cell phones into the toilet and opened the cupboard with the key, looted the jewels and cash and escaped.

M.T. Ganesamoorthy, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vellore Range and I. Eswaran, Superintendent of Police, Vellore visited the spot, made enquiries and supervised the investigation. Three special squads led by Inspectors Govindasamy (Gudiyatham Town), Muralidharan (Gudiyatham Taluk) and Chandrasekharan (K.V. Kuppam) have been formed under the leadership of Gudiyatham DSP Sundaram to conduct the investigation and nab the culprits. The dog squad which visited the spot could not trace the culprits.
