TAMBARAM: A 43-year-old man, who was caught by the public on Monday while he attempted to rob a cycle shop owner and handed over to the police, turned out to be a member of a gang that robbed people who withdrew huge sums of money from banks.

Raghunathan, a cycle shop owner in Hasthinapuram, was riding a bicycle, when he was intercepted by a stranger who attempted to rob him. Raghunathan resisted and called out for help and hearing his cries, passersby and people nearby rushed to his help and overpowered the stranger who tried to flee. The robber was handed over to the Chitlapakkam police station and on interrogation, the police found that the man, Subramani of Kolathur, was involved in several crime cases in and around Tambaram.

Police said Subramani was part of a gang that would wait outside banks and distract the attention of people who would step out of the bank premises after withdrawing large sums of money.
