The Chennai Corporation will complete widening of Ayanavaram Road and Raji Street in two months, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Thursday.
Speaking to mediapersons after inspecting the widening work, which is being undertaken at a cost of Rs.4.34 crore, he said the roads would become uniformly 15 metre wide.
The two roads that form a long connection between Medavakkam Tank Road and New Avadi Road are prone to traffic snarls as they are narrow.
At present, Ayanavaram Road is 925 metre long and 6.7 metre wide, while Raji Street is 485 metre long and 8 metre wide.
Mr. Subramanian said that no houses or shops were removed for the widening, but land was transferred from the Institute of Mental Health and the Chennai Metrowater. The civic body has paid the Institute Rs.72.39 lakh for reconstruction of its compound wall and Rs.55.24 lakh to the Metrowater for construction of a new wall.
In the past four years, 332 road widening works were undertaken for a length of 138.60 km at a cost of Rs. 27.26 crore.
This year, the Corporation has planned to widen portions of Ennore Highway, Manali Road, C.P. Road, Kathivakkam Main Road and Woods Road at a total cost of Rs.1.80 crore, he said.
