Vehicular traffic on North Bypass Road here was affected for a while on Thursday after a group of people blocked the busy road demanding the arrest of three persons.

The police said that an altercation broke out between devotees belonging to two different communities during the Ulagamman Temple festival at Thatchanallur here on Tuesday led to the assault of one Jeeva. Subsequently, a case was registered in this connection against three persons under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, but none was arrested.

Demanding the immediate arrest of the trio, a group of people blocked North Bypass Road on Thursday around 7 p.m., which caused untold hardship to road users.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli, M. Loganathan held talks with the agitators. Yet the protest continued for about 30 minutes. As the police geared up to use mild force to disperse the crowd, the agitation was withdrawn following an assurance that those who assaulted Jeeva would be arrested shortly.
