Residents of Mookambigai Nagar and Gurusamy Nagar, falling under Ward 18 of Tirupur Corporation, blocked road on Thursday in protest against the irregular supply of drinking water to the hamlets for over a month.

Activists of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) too joined the agitation.

P. Mahendran, branch secretary of CPI(M), said it was the sheer apathy from the part of administrators in addressing the grievances of the people that led to the present situation.

“People in the two hamlets have not received drinking water for almost a month and making the matters worse, the three borewells in the area have dried up. Despite the problems been taken to the notice of the officials, no significant steps have been taken,” he added.

According to residents, they are buying water from private suppliers paying a higher price to meet their water needs.

It should be noted that a few days back, residents of some nearby hamlets in Ward 18 too resorted to agitations on the same issue.
