CHENNAI: A building contractor constructing the roof of a private building blocked road for hours at Ganga Nagar in Moovarasanpet on Wednesday.

Travellers were denied access to the public road as the contractor barricaded both sides of the stretch with wooden poles. A concrete-mixing engine and dumps of sand and cement bags forced a traffic detour along neighbouring streets.

K. Balraj, a resident of Gokulam Nagar, Moovarasanpet, said blocking a public road for constructing a building was against norms and caused untold hardship to the people.

Residents point out that this is not the only instance where a road has been blocked for constructing a building.

Lax vigil by officials concerned allows numerous such instances to go unnoticed in the suburbs.

Despite bringing the issue to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in St. Thomas Mount, no action has been taken to remove the blockade from the street till noon, the residents alleged. Panchayat officials could not be reached for their comments.

The residents blame lack of enforcement by panchayat and police officials for such violations in the suburbs.
