Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam member Suresh Babu, popularly known as ‘Pottu’ Suresh, started his life as a small-time merchant selling textile goods. He joined the party as an ordinary member 22 years back.
He was close to senior leaders such as M.K. Stalin, the late P.T.R. Palanivelrajan and many other MLAs and MPs in the southern districts. After he got an introduction to Union Minister M.K. Alagiri, he became so close to him that Suresh was described as the eyes and ears of Mr. Alagiri. Many functionaries in the DMK, who were once close to Mr. Alagiri, were suddenly kept at a distance after his entry.
Between 2006 and 2011, during the DMK rule, ‘Pottu’ Suresh wielded power in the party and many described him as the “shadow” of Mr. Alagiri. Nothing in the party’s affairs in the southern districts happened without his nod. Be it a party posting or a tender in a government department or a police posting, it had the stamp of Suresh in some way or the other. Many officers in the rank of Inspectors and above got postings of their choice after ‘Pottu’ Suresh intervened.
According to DMK functionaries, Suresh decided on appointments on behalf of Mr. Alagiri. “Many ministers, MPs and MLAs in the party from southern districts received instructions from Suresh.”
According to PWD contractors, they got major tenders only after Suresh approved them. Fifty-nine major PWD works, estimated at over Rs. 150 crore, for southern districts was cleared only by Suresh, according to grapevine.
