: A revenue court would come into functioning from January 21, in the district. The court would include the revenue blocks of Nagapattinam, Vedaranyam, Keezhvelur and Thirukuvalai under its jurisdiction.

The revenue court would bring under its jurisdiction litigations arising out of lease deed arrangements between tenant cultivators, and land owners, under Tamil Nadu Cultivating Tenants Protection Act, 1955; and also arrangements arising out of lease deeds between tenants and Trust lands, and temple lands falling under Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Board.

The tenant’s liability would be arrived at as per Tamil Nadu Cultivating Tenants (Payment of Fair Rent) Act, 1956. Further, under Tamil Nadu Agricultural Lands Records of Tenancy Rights Act, 1969, those aggrieved by the decisions of Tahsildars will have an appellate authority in the newly constituted Revenue Courts, in order to seek redressal. Further, under Tamil Nadu Tenancy Rights Act, efforts will be taken to provide pattas for those housed in hutments in private lands, and eking out a living on those lands, without any ownership of pattas elsewhere. Setting up of four such revenue courts in Lalgudi, Mannargudi, Nagapattinam and Tirunelveli was announced by the Chief Minister in the last budget session of the State Assembly.
