: Communist Party of India (CPI) urged the State Government to retrieve Katchatheevu to ensure the welfare of fishermen in Rameswaram and other eastern coasts.

It should mount pressures on the Centre in this regard so that fishermen in the state would not be affected.

Speaking to media persons here on Thursday, senior leader of the CPI, R. Nallakannu, said that the CPI wanted to forge an alliance with parties than the Congress and the BJP in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.

He also demanded steps to desilt irrigation tanks, ponds and other water bodies to enable farmers to undertake agriculture operation with an intention to enhancing the productivity.
