Residents stalled a move to sink a deep borewell for supplementing the water pumped from Ramanathapuram Combined Drinking Water Supply Scheme, on the Cauvery river near Melur in Srirangam on Friday. A group of residents gathered at the spot where the borewell was to be sunk and objected to the move saying that they were already facing a steep fall in water table in the region and the tapping of water from the dry river bed would severely affect them. Police intervened to pacify the agitators who dispersed after being told that the issue would be settled through talks.
