SALEM: Several residential areas in Salem city have been reeling under mosquito menace for the past few months. Lack of regular fogging measures, especially after the recent rains, has aggravated the issue.

Residents have been spending sleepless nights as the problem has increased to alarming proportions in almost the entire city.

The gross failure of Salem Corporation in carrying out regular cleaning operations was the main reason for the increase in the mosquito menace, residents charged.

Anti-mosquito measures such as fogging and spraying of repellents were seldom undertaken in many of the localities.

The fogging operations were virtually abandoned particularly in the inner parts of the city.

Anti-larval or anti-mosquito measures had not been not taken up either, citizens alleged.

The heavily silted drains and stagnation of sewage had become fertile breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The civic body had failed to ensure regular cleaning in the drains.

The private firm, Swatchata Corporation, responsible for carrying out sanitary works in 21 wards in the city, had also failed to ensure regular cleaning, they said.

The civic body used to take up anti-mosquito measures through vehicle-mounted fogging machines at least once in a week. But, this had not been done after the rains, residents point out.

Unattended garbage in many pockets of the city has intensified the problem. Meanwhile, Corporation officials said that they had launched an intensive mosquito control drive recently. Sanitary workers would be deputed to all the wards in the city to carry out mass cleaning operations.

The drive would be carried out till February 10. Apart from cleaning activities, anti-larval measures and fogging operations would be carried out in all the parts in the city, officials said.
