A statement said advanced researches on various aspects of environmental monitoring, assessment and environmental biotechnology are being carried out by A.G. Murugesan, Professor at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University's Sri Paramakalyani Centre of Excellence in Environmental Sciences, Alwarkurichi, who is operating several funded projects. Recently he has been awarded with a few more projects by different agencies and the Union Government to investigate potential application of irradiation for preserving and increasing the shelf-life of select food stuffs, assessing the flora and fauna around Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project site and production of easily degradable biopolymer by suitably processing coir waste employing microbes.
Postgraduates or M.Phil. degree holders in Microbiology, Zoology, Botany or any other biological sciences can join as full-time research scholars in these projects for 2 to 3 years and obtain Ph.D. degree also. Stipend ranges from Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 16,000.
