Garlanding the statute of Marshal Nesamony, paying rich tribute to other Tyagis, distributing sweets and exchanging greetings marked the birth of Kanyakumari district, which was carved out Travancore on the same day 57 years ago.

Marshal Nesamony, the architect who had got Kanyakumari merged with the then Madras, is affectionately called as patriarch, advocate, marshal and the father of Kanyakumari district.

As many of the oppressed people failed to get education in the then Travancore state, it was Marshal Nesamony who strived hard to ensure the education of the girl children.

It was Nesamony who successfully campaigned for adult franchise and he successfully led the popular agitation to liberate Tamil areas comprising the present Kanyakumari district in the southern part of Travancore state and got it merged with Tamil Nadu, said president of State Wakf Board and general secretary of Tyagi Association, Tamilmahan Hussien.

Later, he garlanded the statute of Kunjan Nadar, situated at Anna bus stand and Vetturnimadam. Political leaders and others garlanded the statue of Marshal Nesamony at Anna bus stand.
