The birthday of Lord Vinayaka, which is called as Vinayaka Chathurthi, was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour in Puducherry on Wednesday. Special pujas were performed at various temples across the Union Territory. Long queues were seen in many of the temples.

Manakula Vinayakar temple, which receives devotees from across Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and others, had a steady stream of visitors. Special abishegams were performed to the main deity. Kozhukattai and sundal were offered.

Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Dr. Iqbal Singh was among those visited the temple for darshan. On behalf of various associations and the Hindu Munnani, giant size Vinayakar idols have been kept in various places on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi. Special pujas were performed to them. Security had been tightened in the town in view of the celebrations.
