TIRUNELVELI: Demanding the regularisation of their service, a group of 22 sanitary workers of Alangulam town panchayat submitted petitions to the Collector G. Prakash on Monday.

The petitioners said that though they had been working as sanitary workers for the past thirteen years, their services were yet to be regularised. Even after the Minister for Local Administration had assured in the Assembly that services of temporary sanitary workers, who had served continuously for two years in the local bodies, would be regularised, the Executive Officer of Alangulam Town Panchayat had terminated their 13-year service.

“Since the local body has only ten permanent sanitary workers to serve the population of over 25,000, the services of temporary sanitary workers should be regularised, considering their 13 years of service,” they appealed.

Demanding free house site patta, a group of residents from Nehru Nagar in ward 48 of Tirunelveli Corporation submitted petition to the Collector. They, mostly beedi rollers, construction workers and domestic workers, said they were living in a government poramboke land for the past forty years and hence, free house site pattas might be given to them.
