MADURAI: The Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) has embarked on an ambitious project of electrification of a record 1,000 route km of railway track in the country during the current fiscal.

The best coverage of electrification in a financial year so far was around 830 route km., achieved in 1991, CORE General Manager G.R. Vij told The Hindu here on Wednesday. He was here after inspecting electrification work under way between Tiruchi and Madurai. CORE had so far covered 18,942 route km. of railway line across the country and was able to aim for the record by optimising its resources.

It had nine project offices in the country as against four to five in the past.

Electrification of railway routes was environment-friendly as it did not cause pollution.
