Udhagamandalam: The decision of the Delimitation Commission of India to include the Nilgiris in the list of reserved parliamentary constituencies should be reconsidered.

Stating this in a memorandum sent to the Commission on Wednesday, the Nilgiris district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party said that there was more to the move than met the eye. It claimed that it had been done with political motives.

Claiming that the decision was tantamount to doing grave injustice to the people of the Nilgiris, the party urged the Commission to restore status quo. It should also explore the possibility of declaring the Nilgiris (comprising Udhagamandalam, Coonoor and Gudalur Assembly segments) as a hill constituency or making the district a union territory. The party stated that if its demand was not met it would seek judicial intervention and also stage demonstrations.
