Unfurling of the national flag, celebrations in residential neighbourhoods, events to reinforce the welfare provisions of the Constitution, presentation of awards and honours marked Republic Day celebrations of various organisations in the city on Thursday.

Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy hoisted the Tricolour at Ripon Building. He distributed loan amount of Rs.5 lakh each to two women self-help groups. A total of 40 employees of various departments of Chennai Corporation were honoured for exemplary work. Two engineers of Adyar Zone received the award for their efforts towards re-laying of plastic roads.

National Cadet Corps of Chennai Higher Secondary Schools in Saidapet and Nungambakkam were honoured. Chennai Schools in Pulla Avenue, Buddha Street and M.H.Road received awards.

Scouts and Guides of Chennai Schools took part in the parade. Cultural programmes of over 300 students of Chennai Schools were also organised. Corporation Commissioner P.W.C.Davidar was present.

At Chennai Metrowater headoffice Managing Director K.Gopal hoisted the national flag. Driver V.Chelliah was honoured for exemplary service for 20 years.

Chennai Collector S.Madumathi hoisted the national flag at the Collectorate on Rajaji Salai and distributed cash assistance to beneficiaries.
