RBI van goes off the road

An accident on the Kallhatty Road, near here, created a flutter on Thursday.

The Superintendent of Police, S. Nizamuddin, told The Hindu that a van engaged by the Reserve Bank of India for transporting a large amount of coins had come here on Wednesday.

Coins

After unloading coins worth Rs. 30 lakh at the branches of the State Bank of India in Coonoor, Kotagiri and Ooty, the van was proceeding to the Gudalur branch of the bank via the steep Kallhatty Road with coins worth Rs. 10 lakh when it reportedly went out of control and fell below the road near Ekoni.

Driver Ramoorthy sustained multiple injuries.

He was taken to Coimbatore.

Three others who were in the van escaped unhurt.

The coins, which had fallen down were collected with the help of local police and the staff of the SBI here and shifted to another vehicle. The damaged van was lifted with the help of a brake down vehicle of the police.
