A woman was arrested here after she allegedly smuggled ration rice in a passenger train in the late hours of Tuesday.

Acting on information, the Government Railway Police held P. Dhanalakshmi (36), a native of Karur district, upon her arrival at Tiruchi Junction by the Erode-Tiruchi passenger train.

Sixteen bags containing 400 kilograms of ration rice were seized from the woman, railway police sources said. The woman is said to have planned to send the rice bags to Mangalore through the early morning Chennai – Mangalore Express.

The woman and the rice bags were later handed over to the Civil Supplies –CID Unit. The woman was later sent for remand.
