: A 13-year-old girl in Tuticorin district was allegedly raped by a 25-year-old man. A medical examination of the victim indicated that she was three months pregnant.

“After our daughter complained of acute stomach pain on April 26, we took her to a nearby doctor, who revealed that she had conceived,” the girl’s parents, Mookammal and Velayutham, told Evidence, a Madurai-based non-governmental organisation.

According to the NGO, the victim struck up an acquaintance with a milk vendor in the locality.

“On more than three occasions, he had taken my child to his house and abused her,” the parents alleged. The Tuticorin All-Woman Police Station registered a case of rape against Michael Raj, the milk vendor, and arrested him. Later, he was produced before a judicial magistrate court, which remanded him to custody.

He was sent to Palayamkottai Central Prison, a press release from Evidence said. The State government should provide compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the family and take steps to provide counselling to the members, particularly the victim, said Kathir, Executive Director of Evidence.
