: Condemning the murder of two brothers who campaigned against illegal sand mining in Pudukottai district, PMK leader S. Ramadoss on Sunday demanded a CBI inquiry into illegal sand mining in the State in the last 10 years.

In a statement here, Dr Ramadoss held the police responsible for the murder of the brothers—Rajesh and Karthick—saying that failure on the part of the police to take action on the complaint of Rajesh had emboldened the sand smugglers who murdered him. “On the one hand, sand smuggling has assumed gigantic proportions, and on the other, mines, minerals and other natural resources are subjected to exploitation by private parties. While the state government has earned only Rs 188 crore through sand mining, those who sell sand on behalf of the government made Rs 15,000 crore. This shows the level of sand mining in the state,” he said.

Dr Ramadoss said natural resources in the state could not be protected without protecting the social workers and demanded action against the murders and officials who connived with the sand smugglers.
