In support of the Jan Lokpal Bill and to thank social activist Anna Hazare, members of the Salem Citizens Forum and Y Collective took out a march from the Gandhi statue to Ambedkar statue here on Sunday.

A candle was lit in front of the statues of Gandhi, Periyar and Ambedkar. The participants raised slogans against corruption and demanding early passing of stringent anti-corruption laws.

Later, a public discussion was carried out at the Vijayaragavachariar Hall in which speakers from various walks of life aired their views and expressed solidarity in the fight against corruption.

They also unanimously declared that the formation and enactment of this bill had to be closely watched and monitored.

Many said that the Jan Lokpal Bill, a law to be enacted to take on corruption in high places, would see an effective bureaucratic set up in place.

For a country plagued by corruption and a poor track record of action against the same, a new law and a change in set up would always be welcome.

Many spoke against the functioning of Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, which, despite stringent laws, did not enforce the same sternly.

They also pledged their support to Anna Hazare who had been demanding that the Lokpal Bill, drafted by the Government, be replaced by the Jan Lokpal Bill.
