A large number of students and women marched at a rally organised as part of the International Women's Day celebration in Perambalur on Thursday.

The rally was intended to sensitise people against child marriage and female infanticide and to highlight the importance of equal opportunities for women, women education and prevention of domestic violence against women.

Over 1,300 students and women marched in the rally taken out from the Revenue Divisional Office to the new bus stand. Collector Darez Ahmed flagged off the rally.

Speaking at a function held at the Collectorate later, Mr.Ahmed emphasised the need for sex ratio in the district as the birth rate of female babies was much lower than male ones. During January, 380 male and 299 female babies were born in the district. He appealed to women to come forward and inform the district administration instances of female infanticide and child marriages.

Seminars and cultural programmes were organised as part of the celebrations in the district.
