Udhagamandalam: Under the aegis of the Nilgiris - Wynaad Tribal Welfare Society (NWTWS), a rally on tribal child rights and protection was organised at Ambalamoola near Gudalur on Tuesday.

Carrying placards which bore messages like, ‘Childhood is my right, give it back to me’ and ‘Send us to schools and not to farms’, about 175 children from the Government Tribal Residential School, Ayyankolli, Government High School, Ambalamoola and the Government High School, Ambalavayal, participated.

The rally was flagged off by the Sub-Inspector of Police, Ambalamoola Radhakrishnan.

Presiding over a public meeting which followed, the Nellakota Panchayat President, Elsy Michael emphasised the need for providing a strong foundation to the children particularly in the rural areas.

The Project Manager, NWTWS G.Peter Ronald also spoke.

A cultural programme formed part of celebrations to mark the occasion.
