Members of women's and farmers' confederations took out a rally from VOC Ground at Palayamkottai on Thursday in connection with International Women's Day to highlight their demand, ‘Conserve Tamirabharani'.

The rallyists raised slogans urging the State Government to initiate immediate steps to protect the already badly contaminated perennial river from being polluted further.

They said the Tamil Nadu Government should impose permanent ban on sand mining on Tamirabharani riverbed and the local bodies on the bank of the river should completely stop the mixing up of domestic and industrial effluents in the river.

Village-level monitoring committees should be set-up to check all sorts of activities that would pollute the Tamiraparani. Rev. Fr. S.
