NAGAPATTINAM: An awareness rally against the use of plastic in places of worship was organised here by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board on Thursday.

The rally that took off from the Nagore dargah, progressed through the main streets of Nagore and concluded on the Nagore Beach.

The Board had taken the initiative following the announcement by the Tamil Nadu Environment Minister that plastic objects that could not be recycled should be phased out of places of religious worship. Flagging off the rally and speaking on the occasion, Collector C.Munianathan pointed out to the use environmental hazards caused by use of plastics, especially those objects with lesser than 40 microns. Use of non-recyclable and non-biodegradable plastic pollute ground water and cause irreparable damage to environment and physical health, Mr.Munianathan said. Further, Municipal administration, and health department proposes to conduct surprise inspections at places of worship to deter traders and public from use of plastics.
