RAMANATHAPURAM: The Movement Against Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project on Friday took out a rally at Rameswaram, urging State and Central Governments to stop the dredging work immediately.

The participants took a vow to fight against the project. N. Markandeyan, former vice-chancellor, Gandhigram University, presided.

Nearly 500 people joined the protest. They claimed the dredging was being carried out with insufficient studies on geology, sub-surface geology, oceanography and other aspects. The authorities had done data sampling only in ten locations along the navigation route. A similar study was not undertaken in the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park. They said dredging in the Adam’s Bridge area would result in severe environmental destruction of the Gulf of Mannar.
