Rallies, public meetings mark May Day celebrations

Rallies and public meetings by various political parties and trade unions marked the May Day celebrations in the city on Wednesday.

R. Umanath, veteran CPI (M) leader, hoisted the party flag at the Venmani Illam, the district headquarters of the party on the Karur bypass road this morning, in the presence of S. Sridhar, secretary of the district unit of the party. Party flags were hoisted at various parts of the district, including 250 centres in the city.

The CITU members took out a rally from the Gandhi Market to Sarukkuparai in the evening and it was led by R. Raja, district president of the CITU. The rally ended with a public meeting. R. Rasul, State secretary of the CITU, R. Sampath, district president, K. C. Pandi, district vice president, and others spoke. The CPI district secretary, T. Indirajith, hoisted the party flag at the party office in the morning. K. Suresh, district secretary, AITUC Construction Workers’ Union, hoisted the party flag at Karumandapam.

Members of various wings of the AITUC participated in a rally taken out from Puthur four roads junction. Later a public meeting was held at Kora Street in which N. Mani, district secretary, Transport Workers’ Union, and Kamaraj of the BSNL All India Officers Association spoke.

R. Manoharan, MLA and chief whip of the AIADMK in the Assembly, hoisted the party flag at a function organised by the Anna Thozhil Sanga Peravai at the TNSTC depot in the city. The Tiruchi rural district unit of the AIADMK organised a public meeting at Manapparai in the evening. T. Rathinavelu, secretary of the rural district unit, spoke.

The labour wing of the DMK too celebrated the day by hoisting the party and union flags.

S. Senthilkumar, MLA, hoisted the flag under the auspices of the labour wing of the DMDK at the TNSTC depot in Cantonment. Vijayarajan, secretary of the urban district unit of the party, was present.
