The arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy has revealed the true face of Mahinda Rajapaksa, just two weeks after the Sri Lankan President attended the swearing-in of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister, the former Union Minister, G.K. Vasan, said on Sunday.

Talking to journalists here, he said the Indian government had to find a permanent solution to the problems faced by fishermen. Since the Congress, with its presence nationwide, had a better understanding of issues, it could not be isolated by the three regional parties: the AIADMK, the Trinamool Congress and the Biju Janata Dal, he said.

Mr. Vasan attributed the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant attaining its full generation capacity to the efforts of the Congress-led UPA government and said it was the responsibility of the Centre to fulfil the power needs of industries in Tamil Nadu.

He held the Tamil Nadu Government responsible for under-utilisation of the Rs. 200 crore provided during the UPA regime for treating effluents discharged by industries in Erode, Tiruppur and Namakkal districts.
