The centenary year of the Indian cinema will be celebrated here at Alliance Francaise with the screening of the 1913 silent film that started it all, Raja Harischandra , on May 17.
Written, directed and produced by Dadasaheb Phalke, it the first full length Indian feature based the story of the king Harischandra, recounted in the Ramayana and Mahabharata .
The film was released on May 3, 1913 and declared a hit. Little did anyone expect it to be the beginning of the world’s biggest film industry.
Dadasaheb Phalke’s 40-minute classic will be screened at 6.30 p.m. at the auditorium in Alliance at Vasanthnagar. Entry is free.
