COIMBATORE: Rain intensified in many parts of the district since Saturday night and brought good inflow to the tanks in the city through River Noyyal.

The tiled roof of an old shop structure on Thadagam Road collapsed after it became very damp owing to persistent rain. No one was hurt. Drizzle and sharp showers took turns to allow people to step out for Deepavali shopping and drive them back indoors.

Coimbatore Corporation officials said heavy rain continued to pound the Siruvani catchments and the water level was inching closer to the full reservoir level.

If this continued, last week’s forecast of water overflowing from the dam soon after Deepavali might come true, they said.

Meanwhile, the sluices of the Pilloor Dam were opened to discharge water into River Bhavani.
