Weather forecast for Tuesday is cloudy skies with a few spells of rain

Chennai: Rain continued to play havoc with traffic on Monday as motorists wove their way through potholes and stagnant pools of water.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, a trough of low pressure lies over south west Bay and adjoining south Tamil Nadu – Sri Lanka coast.

The weather forecast for Tuesday is generally cloudy skies with a few spells of rain.

Between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. on Monday, the meteorological observatory at Nungambakkam recorded 3.4 mm rainfall and Meenambakkam recorded 8.9 mm rainfall.

Though the Chennai Corporation has decided not to permit road cuts during the monsoon, a few roads are still dug up for pending work.

Madhavaram High Road in Perambur has been dug up to construct stormwater drains and motorists had to take diversions.

The condition of roads in suburbs is worse.

Valasaravakkam in the west and Medavakkam in the south have been badly affected.

Catchment areas

Catchment areas received substantial rainfall.

Thamaraipakkam received 44 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Poondi, Red Hills and Cholavaram recorded rainfall of about 30 mm each while Chembarambakkam recorded 40 mm.
