The widespread rain over the past few days and the substantial increase in the storage at the Mettur reservoir has lifted the spirits of farmers in the district.

On Thursday many parts of Tiruchi district received moderate showers.

Tiruchi city received steady showers right through the forenoon amidst overcast conditions. The rain however made for slushy conditions in the city roads.

Farmers' representatives while terming it as welcome showers said that the rain would be beneficial for the ongoing samba cultivation. Transplantation was underway in several parts of the district, where about 62,000 hectares are to be covered under samba this year.

“The situation looks good given the rise in inflow into the Mettur reservoir over the past few days contributing to a substantial increase in the storage position.

The rains have contributed to a rosy picture,” observed G.Kanagasabai, president, Tiruchi District Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association.
