CHENNAI: Station masters and the loco running staff in Chennai division had a rude shock on Friday night when their wireless sets allegedly picked up conversation between Sri Lankan militants.
Officials have been provided the handsets by the administration to keep track of the movement of trains. Chennai division control office, which is linked to all stations in the division, normally gives instructions to station masters (SMs) and to the running staff through SMs for operation of services. The control room also registers the messages delivered by SMs for record purposes.
Railway sources here said that on Friday night the duty SMs in the division to their surprise heard exchange of information between Sri Lankan militants. SMs in stations in Chennai, Vellore, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu districts said they heard slogans such as "Long live Tamil Eelam" in their hand sets. They immediately informed the control office here.
Central intelligence officials were informed about the interception of messages from Lankan militants in the railway wireless sets . A team of intelligence officials was enquiring into the issue, the sources added.
Local police said Sri Lankan militants had powerful wireless sets and some times their conversation was picked up by wireless sets here.
