Railway personnel conducted a special blood donation camp at Tirunelveli Railway Junction on Wednesday in a bid to bailout the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital.

As most of the colleges are closed down for semester examinations during summer, the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, which used to get good number of units of blood from the voluntary student donors, suffers a lot every year.

When the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital officials approached the railway personnel to help them, Medical Officer Sugumar, with the help of the railway administration, organised the first blood donation camp at Tirunelveli Railway Junction.

29 units given

“Though the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital officials expected a maximum of 15 to 20 units of blood, we managed to give them 29 units including a rare group of AB Negative. It is a great beginning. Hence we've planned to conduct similar camps on May 1 every year and all the trade unions have agreed to participate in this camp,” Dr. Sugumar said.

Moreover, a blood donors club is also to be established soon with a complete database of blood donors, added the doctor, who has already conducted good number of health awareness camps and eye screening camp at Tirunelveli Railway Junction.
