Many road works to be implemented in Ramanathapuram

Nine railway overbridges to be constructed in various parts of the State

New bridge to be built across the Vaigai between Paramakudi and Emaneswaram

RAMANATHAPURAM: A railway over-bridge is to be constructed at Pattinamkathan near here on the proposed bypass road junction connecting East Coast Road (ECR) with National Highway 49.

Speaking to The Hindu over phone on Monday, Minister for Slum Clearance S. Thangavelan said that an announcement to this effect was made in the State Assembly on Monday during a debate on highways. The proposed bridge was among nine railway over-bridges planned in different parts of the State.

The Indian Railway Construction (IRCON) Company would undertake the work. It would pave the way for uninterrupted bus travel on East Coast Road and NH 49. Preliminary works would be started soon.

ECR work

The Government had also announced that steps would be taken to complete the much awaited work on ECR, between Tuticorin and Cuddalore, within this year. It would decongest the Chennai-bound traffic on NH 45 as a good number of vehicles would be diverted on ECR.

The Government had earmarked Rs.10.66 crore to construct a new bridge across Vaigai river between Paramakudi and Emaneswaram. The existing weak bridge would be demolished. The bridge width would be as per State Highway requirements since the stretch of road between Thanjavur and Sayalkudi had been upgraded as State Highway road.

One more bridge on an outlay of Rs.2.25 crore would be constructed near Mookaiyur in Sayalkudi constituency. This would facilitate better transport facility to Mookaiyur, where the Government proposed to create a port at a cost of Rs.30 crore as part of the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project. A small bridge would be constructed at Valinokkam at an estimate of 1.25 crore, Mr. Thangavelan said.
