Call for alternative energy sources

TIRUCHI: The fossil fuels that were being currently used are expected to last only for few hundred years. Hence, world over research was going on to develop alternative energy sources. Fuel cell was an emerging option to meet the energy needs of the future, Kannan, lecturer, Department of Physics, Anna University, Chennai, said.

He was addressing the members of The Institution of Engineers (India), Tiruchi local centre and the Computer Society of India, Tiruchi chapter, here on Wednesday.

Dr. Kannan said that the cost per KW of this fuel cell was in the order of 10,000 US dollars. Continuous improvement to reduce the cost of this fuel cells was being carried out by research scholars. Use of Nano composite protonic membrane in fuel cells would bring down the cost of fuel.

In another 20 years fuel cells would find greater use in our day-to-day life, he added.

The Chairman, Computer Society of India, E. Kirubakaran, the joint hononary Secretary of the Tiruchi local centre of The Institution of Engineers (India), S. Madhavan, among others, also spoke.
