Collector flags off awareness run in Tuticorin

Tuticorin: A run for spreading awareness of `Scientific management of natural resources' conducted by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) was held here on Saturday.

Flagging off the run, the Collector, R. Palaniyandi, reiterated the need for sustainable use and management of natural resources such as water, wildlife, trees and earth deposits, for the use of future generations.

He said the conservation of renewable resources like trees would ensure that they were not consumed faster than they could be replaced.

According to him, development should take place but not by depleting the natural resources.

He urged the people to harvest the rainwater which otherwise got wasted.

In all, 500 children studying at 10 school in the district took part in the 3.5 km run, which started from the SDAT grounds in the town, traversed through Victoria Extension road and West Great Cotton road to culminate at the starting point.

The participants carried placards carrying messages to the public on how to conserve our opulent natural resources and the need to plant at least a tree in every household.

The District Sports Officer, A. Santhan, coordinated the run.
