CHENNAI: All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday urged the Centre to despatch India's humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka through the International Red Cross Society (ICRS).

Referring to the Centre's announcement on despatch of essential commodities to the island, she said in a statement here that it was doubtful as to what extent the relief would reach the suffering Tamils in the prevailing situation.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also condemned the denial of police permission to the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for staging a demonstration against "killing of Lankan Tamils" before the Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai.

"Anti-people"

Dubbing the denial "anti-people," she said, "Resorting to agitations and demonstrations in the interest of the people is an important democratic duty."

During the AIADMK rule, permission was duly given for such protests.
