Sharp showers lashed parts of the district for the second consecutive day on Saturday, bringing respite to the people who were reeling under severe heat for the past few months.

A 38-year old quarry worker R. Pazhanisamy died when a portion of the wall at his rest room in the quarry, collapsed on Friday night.

The incident happened when he was asleep.

For the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday, Iluppur recorded a maximum of 87.4 mm of rain, followed by Annavasal 25.2 mm and Kudumiyanmalai, 22.4 mm.

Strong winds and lightning also accompanied the rain.

Residents indoors

On Saturday, the showers forced the residents to stay indoors at Iluppur, Malaikudipatti and Ennai.
