The government has directed the Public Works Department to complete, by Sunday, renovation of the Assembly Chamber at Fort St. George.

The Department has re-deployed many of its personnel to ensure that the deadline is met, sources say.

The historic Chamber had its last sitting of the Assembly on January 11, 2010, after which the House met at the Secretariat-Assembly complex on the Omandurar Government Estate.

Till recently, the Assembly Chamber housed a reference library of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil.

The library has been relocated to one of the rooms on the ground floor of the new Assembly Complex.

The Assembly Secretariat has got a new chief. A.M.P. Jamaludeen, till now joint secretary, has been appointed Secretary.

He replaced M. Selvaraj who was on an extension and allowed to retire on Monday. Additional secretary S. Balachandar has been made special secretary.

Notification

Officials say a notification has been issued, declaring the dissolution of the 13{+t}{+h}Assembly and the constitution of the 14{+t}{+h}Assembly.
