Ramanathapuram: Foreign products, right from pen to cars, always have quite a few takers in our country. Quality is perceived as a reason. Now, it is the turn of a foreign rooster variety that is attracting a score of bird lovers.

Though the weight of the cock is just 375 grams, it costs a whopping Rs.1,500, nearly 15 times that of its country cousins. The bird receives a steady stream of bird lovers, at least to see it.

The name of the cock is `table fighter,' with origin from Japan. Though the bird was brought to Tamil Nadu a few years ago, because of its high cost and maintenance, very few buy this bird.

The bird is known for its small size and fighting prowess. `Experts' say the bird, even after attaining maturity, grows only to a maximum of 400 grams as against two to three kg of country varieties. But it has enormous stamina and fighting power.

"It looks just like a two-month old country variety. But it is a mature bird. Our country cock varieties cannot match with the table fighter. It can jump up to five metres and fight with even old roosters. Enquiries pour in from at least 15 to 20 potential buyers," says P. Bala of Ramanathapuram, who runs a farm to sell pet birds.

Almond, dates, groundnuts and white of egg are some of its favourite food.
